Portland Downs Puerto Rico in USL Action

>> Thursday, April 17, 2008

On Thursday evening, Timber Jim (Jim Serrill) walked off into retirement with one last victory to notch onto his lumberjack belt. The Portland Timbers long-standing mascot was honored before, during, and after the opening-night game for his years of service to the organization. Commemorative T-shirts were handed out, a half-time ceremony was conducted, and Timber Jim even remained after to sign autographs for his fans.

Timber Jim revelry aside, the game ended up a success as well when
Chris Brown's goal in the 71st minute proved enough to secure 3 points from the Puerto Rico Islanders. Brown who spent time with Real Salt Lake last season will be counted upon to be an offensive threat throughout the season.

PGE Park has become somewhat of a fortress for the Timbers. The team went on to enjoy an unbeaten record (8-0-6) at their home park during 2007's regular season. The Timbers last loss at home came on Sept. 7, 2006 to the Atlanta Silverbacks.

The Timbers next mascot will certainly be new, but coming to PGE Park will continue to be troubling for opposing USL clubs.

Scoring Summary:

Portland Timbers:
Chris Brown (71')
